Being a new parent can be scary. Being a new parent and doing it by yourself or without the help of a spouse or partner can be absolutely terrifying. Take comfort in knowing you are not the first and nor will you be the last to embark on this journey. There are many tips you can use to help make the transition of becoming a single parent easier.
- The most important thing to remember is that you are not alone. There is your group of family and friends who will happily lend a hand to you when you ask. That said, do not isolate yourself or be afraid to ask for help. To isolate yourself and cut away the ties of people nearest to you will make it all so much more difficult and make you feel bad about the situation.
- In the beginning stages of parenting, you must remember to not neglect yourself. While you may not be able to go to a spa or pamper yourself, focusing on your basic needs is going to be beneficial to you and your newborn. Eating, sleeping, and exercising need to be more of a priority than some chores. Overworking will not only put a strain on you, but also on your baby’s wellbeing.
- It’s easy being a single parent to fall victim to envy. You may have many friends or people in your circle that are married and have kids, or just are couples in general. The fact of the matter is, thinking that everything would be perfect if only you had a partner, is just an illusion. Even married people have their problems.
- Make sure to have a plan set in place for any emergency or urgent situations. It could be the middle of the night and your baby has a fever, but you have no medicine. Or maybe you’ve caught some illness and you’re now unable to care for your child properly. It’s good to have a list of emergency contacts that you can reach out to in order to help care for you or child. There may be emergency babysitting centers in your area, and while they aren’t usually cheap, they can help handle the situation quickly.
- Try to make a babysitting network for yourself. Get involved in the community, whether it be through a church or support group or single parents’ group. Once you have people who also have children, or are even single parents themselves, in your life, making these connections will be greatly beneficial to you when you need to find a babysitter for that last-minute meeting you have to go to at work, or for a family emergency where you’ll need to be gone a whole weekend. The last thing you would want to do is leave your baby with someone that you don’t trust. Some single parents have done things even like housing a student, who can provide childcare in exchange for rent. Also, “trade-offs” with your friends who are also parents can be a way to provide relief for yourself and also a playdate and socialization for your child.
- As your child gets older, parenting can be extremely difficult by yourself, not being able to ask someone else’s opinion on how to handle certain situations. Parenting is a skill, like any other, that is developed and refined over time. You have to learn and adapt with each situation as it comes. Be engaged in your child’s life. The involvement and presence you have in your child’s life will play an important role in who they develop as a person. Make sure that you try to be open and try to see things from other angles, as well as your child’s perspective. You will be the most important person in their life.
- Sometimes it will be good to follow your kid’s lead, let them take on roles and responsibilities and share the load to be taught responsibility. It will also help to take a weight off of your shoulders. Being consistent and fair in how you discipline your child will also be extremely important. That’s not to say that you can’t rethink the way you are disciplining, cool off, and use good judgment later. In fact, you should. Being levelheaded is not easy, and will not always be possible, but is a skill that will be crucial to you and your child and your quality of life.
