How to Enhance your Child’s Time Management Skills: Expert Advice in Sugar Hill

Knowing how to manage one’s time is directly linked to later success in life. Time can be a difficult concept for children to understand at first, but teaching them how to manage time is as important as teaching them to tell time. Most parents are sure to teach their children essential time habits early on but tend to fall behind in teaching them how to manage it.
While a child may understand that he needs to be at school on time or that the day is limited, they don’t understand why until taught otherwise. Children begin to pick up the cognitive skills needed to organize their time independently around middle school, but it’s possible to teach them to start planning and prioritizing their time earlier with a few simple tips.
Useful Activities to Teach Time Management Skills
- Make a Calendar: One of the easiest activities is to put together a physical calendar of some kind with your child. This allows them to visualize how time is passing and see where their daily activities, such as studying and playing fit into the week. Encourage them to use it themselves and talk to them about planning days.
- Practice Waiting: When something is immediately provided, a child cannot fully comprehend the purpose of time management. By making your child wait for something, whether it be a fun treat or outing, they experience the excitement build-up of waiting and the eventual joy that comes at the end.
- Use a Visual Timer: A concrete way for kids to picture their time is by showing them the way it passes using any kind of visual symbol. Give your child a task, such as a homework assignment and leave out a sand timer so they can visualize the time being used.
- Discuss the Seasons: Children start to notice the passage of time by seeing the progression in tangible ways. Observe a tree with them over the course of the year and talk about the ways that the leaves are changing. They are able to grasp the concept of time more easily by relating nature to their daily lives.
- Set Timelines: To solidify the time periods that your kid needs to dedicate toward daily habits, make a time chart. This will help them begin to keep track of each thing they do, like brushing their teeth or eating their breakfast, and how long these activities take out of their day. If your child is able to read a stopwatch or clock, have them allocate a designated number of minutes for each activity (i.e., two minutes for brushing their teeth, five minutes for getting dressed) that they color in on the time chart.
- Teach Organization: At its simplest, time management is just the organization of activities to fit everything into a day. Teaching a kid that there’s a place for everything and everything is in its place helps them accept that the same is true of their time.
- Set Consequences: At a certain age, children are able to start holding themselves accountable for their actions, but they also need a parent to set a precedent. A reward might be that if your child does all of their homework assignments for that week, they get an extra hour of TV. Consequently, if they do not complete that task, withhold the extra hour of television. Next week, they’ll have a better understanding of how they are rewarded when they manage their time well and what will happen if they don’t.

It may seem like over-parenting, but even toddlers can start picking up some of these behaviors. A parent sets the foundation of their child’s time management skills, and it’s vital that they start teaching them these habits young. This will help in their daily lives, their relationships with others, and their eventual education and career paths.
