Methods to Uplift Your Child’s Creativity

In today’s day and age, where so much of our day to day lives are consumed with focusing on social media and smart phones and other technologies, many children are growing up without the same creativity they would have if these technologies were not present. Creativity is something that one develops, so it is never too late to start helping your child develop their own sense of creativity and imagination.
- If you, as a parent, prefer that your child’s day is more structured and scheduled, a good way to incorporate more creativity in your child’s life could be to make an hour of their day dedicated to crafts or an activity of their choice. It could be painting and drawing or writing and music or even just playing pretend. By making this a part of their schedule, it will help teach your child that creativity is important to have as a part of their routine.
- Make sure that your child has all the tools necessary to be able to express themselves. This could simply be an easel and paper and some art supplies like crayons and colored pencils.
- If your child enjoys building things with toys like Legos or Kinex, this can be an amazing way to help them develop their creativity. Many sets come with specific pieces and instructions, but you can always encourage your child to make things that don’t have instructions and just let them use their imagination.
- You can also create mini worlds. Using a shoe box or even a big bowl and using moss and rocks and grass, you can create a miniature garden or make homes for fairies.
- Encouraging your child to read is another fantastic way to boost their creativity. If your child isn’t old enough to read on their own, being read a story by you is just as beneficial. Going to the library or a bookshop with your child and letting them pick out the book they want is a good way to give them creative freedom and control.
- At first, a museum or art gallery may seem like a dreary idea to take your child to for the day, but there are many museums and galleries that now have interactive exhibits. You can also tell your child stories about the pieces you see, such as where the boat in the storm is headed or who the people are in the painting and what they’re doing. Your child’s imagination will grow by filling in the gaps of the stories you tell them and by creating stories of their own.
- As most people know or soon find out, children learn by imitation. They will observe what certain people do and try to emulate those actions or behaviors. So, this does not mean you have to be a perfect artist to be able to stimulate your child’s creativity, simply by engaging and participating with them will be enough. Draw on the driveway with chalk together, or play with them and their toys in their play pretend world.
- You will also want to teach them by example the importance of criticism. Many people associate criticism with a negative connotation, that it only means you have done something incorrectly or not to the right standards. But, on the contrary, using constructive criticism will help your child to enhance their skills while also teaching them to receive and give constructive criticism. This does not mean that you have to be harsh or tell them they are wrong, gentle guidance will go a long way. Try even setting up a family game or contest where all other family members can be the judge on each other’s work.
- It is extremely important to be open and receptive to your child as well. This can include listening to their opinions on any changes that may be happening, such as a move or new pet. It could mean that they really hate string cheese but like Babybel cheese, so you pack their lunch with Babybel instead of string cheese. Your child will have opinions too, and while you are the parent and you make the rules, it’s good for your child to know that their opinions and thoughts are being heard and considered instead of ignored. This helps them to continue to be active thinkers and problem solvers and to provide ideas.
